Between Stokes’ Headingley heroics and Rishab Pant’s Gabba massacre, we forgot to appreciate Kusal Perera’s 153* against South Africa in Durban. What an innings it was! Chasing 300 on a 4th or a 5th-day pitch is the toughest task in international cricket but Kusal Perera made it seem easy that day.<br/>Perera's innings against South Africa in the first test in 2019 was nothing short of extraordinary. No one gave Sri Lanka a chance at the start of the match. They were battered and bruised by England at home and were smashed by New Zealand and Australia Down Under. But as they say 'Never say Never' in sports. They fought till the final second and found a superhuman in the form of Kusal Perera. Let me remind you, this wasn't scripted. But even the greatest of storytellers wouldn't have scripted it any better. Perera's innings was filled with aggressive stroke play and resilience, defying the South African bowling attack against all odds. <br/><br/>In the first test against South Africa in 2019, Sri Lanka was struggling at 52-3 chasing 304 when Kusal Perera stepped up to the crease with determination in his eyes.<br/>Facing a daunting target, Perera showcased incredible skill and resilience against a formidable South African bowling attack consisting of Dale Steyn, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada. Sri Lanka was slowly moving closer to the target at 206-5 but the 64th over changed things when they lost 2 wickets in two balls, this started a domino effect and Sri Lanka’s score became 226-9 in the 70th over. With Perera at 86 and the no. 11 batter as his non-striker, it looked like South Africa would cruise home easily but Perera shifted gears and started talking in boundaries. He did not spare any bowler, whether Steyn, Rabada, or Maharaj.<br/>Perera defied the odds with every stroke, displaying unmatched courage and determination. <br/>And when he reached his century, the crowd erupted in celebration, recognizing the sheer brilliance of his innings. The job wasn’t done yet.<br/>His teammates watched in awe as he single-handedly led Sri Lanka's charge towards victory.<br/>There was a chance of a catch in the 83rd over but it dropped short of Elgar at 3rd slip, du Plessis picked the ball and aimed at the non-striker’s end but missed the direct hit and went for 5 runs. Even luck was on Sri Lanka’s side that day. Perera continued his conquest and got Sri Lanka home 3 overs later.<br/>He played a match-winning knock of 153*, guiding Sri Lanka to a historic one-wicket victory their 2nd ever in test cricket. Their first one-run victory was also against South Africa at Colombo in 2006.<br/><br/>Kusal Perera's innings will be remembered as one of the greatest displays of skill and determination in the history of cricket.

![England used to relish playing in front of a home crowd under Sarina Wiegman, but it is starting to feel like that magic is wearing off.<br/><br/>Defeat against France, their first loss in a qualifying fixture for 22 years, leaves them with work to do if they want to retain their European crown in Switzerland next year.<br/><br/>Only the top two teams will progress automatically from what is a tough Euro 2025 qualifying group, with England now in third place.<br/><br/>They now have to travel to France, who they play again on Tuesday, before facing Ireland at home and Sweden away in July.<br/><br/>Perhaps what is most concerning for Wiegman is that her side has taken just one point from their two home fixtures.<br/><br/>The Lionesses lacked a spark and, in truth, many looked tired after a testing season. Elisa De Almeida’s superb volley, which brought France level after Beth Mead had opened the scoring, was undoubtedly the best moment of a game lacking quality.<br/><br/>‘The result is disappointing and I think unnecessary,’ Wiegman said.<br/><br/>‘I think our performance was good for most parts of the game. The first part of course was very different than [what] we were expecting, so we had to find our feet to get started. After that we did well, we scored a goal, I think we had chances of scoring more, and then they scored from a corner. That was disappointing.<br/><br/>‘Then in the second half, I think we controlled the match more than we did in the first half. But we didn't score, we created almost no chances, so it's that pass that will create the best chance, or the touch, or the cross, in many moments we played pretty well but it's very frustrating that we then conceded a goal from a corner [set-piece], we know they're very good at that, so we wanted to do that [defend set pieces] very well, and in some moments we did but in too many moments we didn't.’<br/><br/>For the first time since February 2023, Wiegman was able to select a centre-back pairing of Leah Williamson and Millie Bright, with both players having spent time out injured in the last year.<br/><br/>But the decision not to select Alex Greenwood, who has enjoyed a fine season with Manchester City, at either center-back or left-back was puzzling.<br/><br/>Greenwood was arguably England’s best player at the World Cup last summer and her composure on the ball and passing ability was missed.<br/><br/>Things got off to a bad start for England when Mary Earps was forced off after just five minutes.<br/><br/>The goalkeeper, who was making her 50th international appearance, appeared to twist her hip after a routine pass and despite efforts to continue, was replaced by Hannah Hampton.<br/><br/>After a cagey opening, Ella Toone could have put England ahead mid-way through the half when she connected with Lauren Hemp’s cross in the box, but her effort spun just wide.<br/><br/>Hemp continued to cause problems down the left wing and, on the half-hour mark, created the opener.
