Instances of after dark anti-social behaviour regularly occurring on Tenby’s beaches , has seen Dyfed-Powys Police vow to step-up high visibility patrols in the area to ‘robustly’ tackle concerns.
Members of the public have been asking what steps police authorities are taking to prioritise safety across Pembrokeshire’s popular beaches at night, following reports of anti-social behaviour regularly occurring late into the night on Friday and Saturday evenings especially, down on North and South beaches in Tenby.
Examples of large groups of teenagers gathering early evening and after dark have highlighted concerns relating to underage drinking and drug-taking.
Also, safety concerns have been raised over bonfires being started very close to the grass cliff areas alongside beaches, with one set of teenagers said to be seen ripping out trees specifically to set them alight.
Operation Dawns Glaw - a campaign led by the Fire Service recently reformed to highlight incidents of deliberately set grass fires across Wales.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “With the summer season almost upon us, the South Pembrokeshire Neighbourhood Policing Teams will once again be conducting high visibility patrols in the Tenby area, targeting anti-social behaviour and criminality.
‘Tenby will see increased patrols, in addition to the Op Lion patrols, which are put in place for the summer months with the influx of visitors to the area.
“Those responsible will be dealt with robustly to keep our communities safe. The team will be utilising all resources at their disposal including dispersal orders, community protection warnings and notices, striving to tackle problematic persons.
“We will also be working with our partner agencies, the team at Tenby Harbour and the local community to continue to ensure that Tenby is a safe area to visit.
“We want residents and visitors to the area to feel safe and enjoy one of Wales’ top tourist locations, we urge those who witness anti-social behaviour or have concerns to contact us.”
Saundersfoot county councillor Cllr Chris Williams recently questioned whether Council Tax payers were getting enough ‘bang for their buck’ when it comes to seeing ‘bobbys on the beat’ around seaside communities, in light of recent tax demands going towards the police precept.
“The police presence amongst the community doesn’t reflect the income they are receiving from communities such as Saundersfoot,” he remarked.
Concerns at the level of policing in Pembroke were also raised recently by local county councillor and town councillor Jonathan Grimes, who stated: “Anti-social behaviour is on the rise, drug-taking is on the rise, and the police response is woefully inadequate at the moment.
“It’s unusual to see police patrols after 10pm because most of the police patrols are carried out by PCSOs who normally finish at 10pm.”

Furious locals say their gardens and driveways are collapsing after building work started on a new estate.

Dozens of residents in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts., were shocked when cracks appeared in their driveways.

Large chunks of people’s gardens in George Street also sank by up to 3ft amid fears of a major landslip.

The damage is believed to have been caused by powerful vibrations coming from diggers doing groundworks on a new housing development nearby.

Construction has been temporarily halted as investigations are carried out into the building work which developers blame on “heavy rain”.

Resident Susan Tighe, 81, says a large area of her lawn and driveway has sunk into the ground.

She said: “It was about two months ago it started, they’re just doing the groundwork at the moment.

“You can’t see anything and you can’t go on the site. We’re high up and the fields lower down. We think they’ve taken some of the soil away.

“We think it’s the vibration of the machinery that’s caused the problems.

“The vibration of the machinery has shaken the earth around the garden.

“I could just see a crack in the ground. It wouldn’t stop.

“It’s a civil engineering job. If they don’t do anything about it, it’ll fall in the field.”

Linda Jackson, 74, who lives on the street with her husband Richard, 76, said: “Our concern is because they’ve dug away the bank and left a 15ft drop from
our garden, we’re concerned that the same thing will happen to us and our lawn will fall away.

“Apparently they’re going to build a retaining wall but no one has been here to communicate that with us. We just pick bits up here and there.

“Our garden could slip away. It’s a significant drop. When I walked down there I couldn't believe it.

“We were overlooking the field but now we’re overlooking a building site.

“We don't have a right to a view, but we have a right to know what’s going on.

“What I would particularly like is some assurance as to what’s happening.

“We’ve been living here since they were built 50 years ago and nothing like this has ever happened before.

“Most of the people around here are retired. We’ve had our garden landscaped, so if it disappeared into the field it would be very upsetting.

“We’ve had a lot of rain but that hasn’t caused the issue before.

“The noise and the dust is incredible.

“I can’t put white sheets outside because the air is full of dust. It’s just ‘bang bang’ all the time.”

People living in nearby Norwood Close have also reported damage to their homes.

John Whitehead, 70, said: \

A string of events in Tenby, Saundersfoot and Amroth on June 6 - will mark the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings, highlighting the part some of Pembrokeshire’s beaches played in the rehearsals for the landings.
Amroth is commemorating the historic D Day events with a beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday, June 6.
A year prior to the D-Day landings, Amroth, and surrounding beaches, was used for a logistics learning and preparation practice.
This rehearsal was known as Exercise Jantzen, and helped the D-Day landings be a huge success.
The area was placed under military control, a curfew and residents’ IDs put in place. The beach contained coasters, landing craft and amphibious vehicles.
Residents were banned from the beaches during the exercise, and police enforced a curfew.
Several roadways were bulldozed through the natural bank of pebbles which lined Amroth beach. This weakened local sea defences, and eventually the Government helped to fund sea walls and groynes.
An abandoned landing craft was visible on Amroth beach for years, until it settled below the sand.
The Allies learnt a great deal from Exercise Jantzen, including many of the shortcomings of unloading equipment from beached ships and barges.
The failings may have proved to the military authorities that the most efficient way of unloading troops and equipment at a secured beachhead was to build an artificial harbour.
Ultimately, this is what happened at Normandy with the building of Port Winston at Arromanches.
According to local folklore, Prime Minister Winston Churchill was one of the interested spectators who witnessed Exercise Jantzen and he drank tea at a hostelry in Wiseman’s Bridge where the beach was also used for the exercise.
On the day of the anniversary, at 7.25am there will be the raising the Flag of Peace at Amroth’s flagpole, and a reading of the Proclamation.
In the evening at the seaside village, at 6.30pm the Amroth Church Bell will sound with a ‘Ring Out For Peace’; before an International Tribute is read out at 9pm; and then the lighting of the beacon at 9.15pm.
Everyone is welcome to join in and remember the historic event, the bravery and sacrifice of the military troops and give thanks for the freedom we enjoy today.

In Tenby, the Mayor Cllr. Dai Morgan, fellow councillors, representatives of Tenby Royal British Legion and local cadet units, will leave Castle Square at The Harbour at approximately 8.50pm on June 6 to process up to Castle Hill.
There, following the reading of the International D-Day Tribute, Cllr. Morgan will light Tenby’s beacon to form part of a UK wide chain of Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace at 9.15pm.

Saundersfoot harbour will host a D-Day Remembrance Service on Saturday, June 8.
With the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings taking place this month, the service hosted by the Community Council will take place on the decking area at 1 pm
