This is the comical moment two cheeky Labradors walked into a village petrol station before stealing bread from the shelves.

The doggy duo were caught on camera strolling into the garage in Leintwardine, Herefordshire, without their owner at 7.30am on Tuesday morning (21/5).

CCTV captured the mischievous mutts browsing the shelves near to the dog food selection- before one of the pooches pilfered a loaf of bread.

But the 'shoplifters' were thwarted by staff at Griffiths Garage as they made their way through the store with the loaf clasped in its jaws.

After being caught in the act, workers put out an appeal on Facebook and were soon able to reunite the two black Labradors with their rightful owner.

Store manager Alan Link said: \

In the second in our Meet the Makers series Matt Stephenson visit Treske Furniture in Thirsk.

There’s a timeless spirit about the towns and villages in the Hambleton and Ryedale districts of North Yorkshire: despite the traffic that zooms through on the busy ‘A’ roads, there’s a feeling that the Kilburn White Horse looks down on the landscape and sees that not everything has changed.
A certain constancy and a respect for tradition underpin the work of Thirsk-based furniture company Treske - and a definite ‘Yorkshire-ness’ too.

“We’re a small company, everybody knows everybody here,” explains CEO Justin Bartlett. “We’re part of the fabric of the town, most of our people live here, we’re an important part of the community and that keeps us rooted in the locality.”

Treske was established in 1973 by ex-Ampleforth College pupil John Gormley – who, despite being a Londoner by birth, found his spiritual home under the gaze of the monumental White Horse and decided to establish his business in Thirsk.

Thirsk appears in the Domesday book as Tresche, the name deriving from the Old Norse for fen or lake. Tresche /Treske/ Thirsk – are different ways of spelling the same thing.

The influence of the Benedictine monks at Ampleforth was clear in Gormley’s approach at Treske, a sense of the Benedictine values of community, stewardship, hospitality and discipline being at the heart of the business, which still occupies the same old maltings that Gormley moved into more than 50 years ago.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a growing interest in self-sufficiency and craft, and Treske can be seen broadly as part of that movement.

Local apprentices literally lived on the premises, learning age-old skills from time-served cabinet makers, eating with Gormley and family at the end of the day, sitting on Treske chairs at Treske tables and sleeping in Treske bunks.

The furniture itself was simple and elegant whilst being robust and well-made, Shakerish-style for a Yorkshire farmhouse, kind-of Habitat-meets-Ercol: “Yorkshire furniture for Yorkshire people with Yorkshire timber.”

Gormley was well-known around local markets and fairs, where he’d set up stall and sell direct to the public. Some years later, and a few miles up the A1 from Thirsk, Gormley’s youngest brother Anthony – also an old Ampleforthian - would also produce work that blended elements of the White Horse with certain religious overtones – the Angel of The North quickly became one of the UKs most-loved works of public art.

In parallel with making furniture for the home, John Gormley also began to produce ecclesiastical furniture – again, the Ampleforth education clearly played a part, a feeling for church buildings being close to Gormley’s heart.

“It’s a side of the business which is still incredibly important to us today,\

A shop manager quit her job to resell second-hand clothing - and now makes up to $5k-a-month.

Stephanie Thornsburg, 43, ran a thrift shop for 16 years - before turning her side hustle of selling her old clothes online into a full-time career.

She started off listing the clothes in her wardrobe - but now makes a living buying and selling second-hand items.

As well as being able to pay herself a salary, Stephanie also uses it to support her two children, 23 and 18, with her husband, Luke, 44, a configuration lead.

Stephanie, from Cincinnati, Ohio, US, said: “I make money by spending time digging and finding the treasures - then putting them on the second-hand market.

“I was ready to be my own boss, too - really take the leap.

“I managed other people for 16 years, after a while, it gets a little overwhelming.

“Now, I’ve never been happier - I’m helping promote slow fashion and I have so much free time on my hands.”

The mum-of-two has always worked in the second-hand industry.

She was the first person to open up a “bricks-and-mortar buy-and-sell store” in her area.

Stephanie managed the shop for 16 years and often felt she had to give up her free time to help out.

“My kids were eight months and five years old at the time,” she said.

“I started out as a store manager - and ended up working my way to district manager.

“When you’re manager, you’re the one who has to end up going in and taking care of things.

“I had to come in on so many of my days off, and work lots of overtime.

“Even if I wasn’t at work, you still get phone calls, and you’re still needed.

“You’d be getting questions at any time of the day.

“I also had some crazy emergencies - like a kid once accidentally crashing his car into the front of our store.”

Other full-time clothing resellers would often come to Stephanie’s shop for “inventory” - which inspired her to make the transition.

She said: “Resellers would particularly come to our women’s and designer stores.

“People bought our stuff to try and sell it on and make some money.

“It piqued my interest that people can do this all by themselves - they don’t have to work for someone.”

In 2020, Stephanie started selling the clothes in her wardrobe as a side hustle - before branching out to other products bought at second-hand shops.

It took her four years to make enough money to replace her nine-to-five income.

She initially started out making $1k profit per month, and now has a turnover of $60k-a-year.

“The trick is to learn which brands sell well,” she said.

“The money comes in when you figure out what those pieces are.

“Size is a huge component for me.

“The average size of a woman in the US is a 16, so I often find sizes 10 and up perform the best.

“It took me a full year to profit $1k to $2k-a-month doing this as a side-hustle - now, it’s $4k to $5k.

“I’ve been able to make what I was making at my old job - but I’m my own boss, and continuing to grow.”
